Lagos State has pledged to strengthen local food production, improve storage and distribution, and reduce post-harvest losses as it steps up efforts to make nutritious meals more affordable.

The state renewed its commitment on Friday as Nigeria joined other countries to mark the 2026 World Food Day at the Police College Parade Ground in Ikeja.

The event, attended by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, was held under the theme, “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow”.

The state government is focusing on agricultural innovation and improvements across the food supply chain to reduce waste and ensure that produce reaches consumers more efficiently.

Beyond boosting output, experts say better storage facilities and distribution networks are essential to preventing food from going to waste between farms and markets.

For Lagos residents, however, the success of the initiatives will depend on whether they lead to lower food prices and better access to nutritious meals.

With food affordability remaining a challenge for many households, the state faces the task of translating its commitments into practical improvements that extend beyond the annual World Food Day celebration.
