The United States is looking to Nigeria’s fashion industry to deepen commercial ties between both countries, with Lagos Fashion Week emerging as a platform for connecting local designers to the American market.

US Consul General in Lagos, Brandon Hudspeth, said the annual fashion event had helped Nigerian designers establish relationships with American buyers and retailers, creating opportunities for trade and investment.

Hudspeth spoke at a luncheon organised by the US Consulate during Lagos Fashion Week 2026, where the event’s founder, Omoyemi Akerele, was recognised for her contribution to building commercial links between the two countries.

He said the platform had spent 15 years promoting African creativity while opening doors to international business opportunities.

“It’s an honour to celebrate Lagos Fashion Week 2026 with so many of Nigeria’s most talented designers and creative leaders,” Hudspeth said.

“For 15 years, Omoyemi has built one of Africa’s premier fashion showcases, connecting Nigerian designers with American buyers and retailers and showing how trade creates opportunity for both our countries.”

The American market presents a significant opportunity for Nigerian fashion businesses, with consumers in the US spending an estimated $560bn on clothing and footwear in 2025, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Access to the market could help Nigerian brands expand beyond domestic and regional customers, while giving American retailers and businesses opportunities to build stronger relationships with African designers and consumers.

Since launching Lagos Fashion Week in 2011, Akerele has developed the event into one of Africa’s leading fashion platforms. Its 2025 edition featured more than 60 designers and attracted about 15,000 guests.

The event has also strengthened its international profile through collaborations and appearances involving major figures in the American fashion industry.

American singer Ciara appeared on its runway in 2025, while Studio 189, a fashion label co-founded by actress Rosario Dawson, showcased its collections in Lagos. New York-based Nigerian designer Tia Adeola has also presented her collections at the event.

Coverage by American fashion publications, including Vogue and Essence, has further increased the visibility of Nigerian designers.

Beyond showcasing collections, Lagos Fashion Week has been connecting local brands with international buyers through trade platforms such as Coterie and NYNOW in New York, as well as Liberty Fairs in Miami.

Luxury retailer Moda Operandi has also offered participating designers access to American shoppers, while The Folklore, founded by American entrepreneur Amira Rasool, connects African fashion brands with US buyers, including through a partnership with Nordstrom.

The luncheon also brought together designers, entrepreneurs and creative industry leaders, with award-winning American-born actress and producer Osas Ighodaro among the guests.

Participants were also introduced to a fashion-themed game developed by Lagos-based Maliyo Games, highlighting links between fashion, technology and entertainment.
