New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has celebrated the contributions of Nigerian New Yorkers to the city's culture and communities.

Mamdani made the remarks in a post on X while commemorating 34 years of the Nigerian Day Parade.

“It was a joy to commemorate 34 years of the Nigerian Day Parade alongside the many Nigerian New Yorkers who fill our city with life,” Mamdani said.

The mayor highlighted the contributions of Nigerian entrepreneurs and the influence of Nigerian music and food across New York.

“From the entrepreneurs whose businesses strengthen our neighbourhoods, to the sounds of Afrobeats pouring out of graduation parties in Southeast Queens, and the aroma of Agege bread calling out to passersby in Brooklyn, the impact of Nigerian New Yorkers is felt across the five boroughs,” he added.

Mamdani said Nigerians' contributions have made New York more culturally diverse and vibrant.

“Our city is richer in culture, stronger in community, and more vibrant because of your contributions,” he said.

The mayor also attended Nigeria's 66th Independence Day celebration in New York on October 3, where he praised the influence of Nigerian food, music and football on the city and wider American culture.
