The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has elected Jigawa-based Dr Usman Abba Ahmed as its new National President, with a mandate to strengthen the profession’s role in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Ahmed emerged alongside 10 other executive officers at the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the NSP Unity Conference 2026 in Kano State.
The week-long conference, held from October 25 to 31, attracted more than 1,000 physiotherapists, researchers, academics, students and other healthcare stakeholders from across the country.
Ahmed will lead the Society’s National Executive Council and represent the profession in engagements with government agencies, regulators and healthcare institutions.
The incoming council is expected to prioritise members’ welfare, expand clinical research and push for greater integration of physiotherapy services into the national health system.
Physiotherapy plays an important role in rehabilitation, chronic disease management and disability prevention.
Other members of the 2026–2028 executive council include Dr Chioma Lynda Onochukwu as Vice-President, Dr Olusegun Adejare as General Secretary, Dr Jibril S. Idris as Assistant General Secretary and Dr Joseph Olamide Samuel as National Treasurer.
Dr Auwal Shittu was elected Financial Secretary, while Dr Isaac B. Akinola became National Public Relations Officer. Dr Saminu Ali Muhammad and Dr Olusola Awoniyi were elected Assistant National Public Relations Officers.
Dr Ahule Tubokenimi and Dr Babatunde Ileyemi will serve as Auditor I and Auditor II respectively.
The conference also featured clinical plenaries, specialised workshops and scientific sessions on contemporary rehabilitation practices.
It hosted the inaugural Early Career Physiotherapists Congress and Seminar, which attracted more than 250 practitioners within their first 10 years of professional practice. The forum provided mentorship and leadership training, with participation from the Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria, Professor Rufa’i Yusuf Ahmad.
