Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic relations, including exchanging ambassadors and opening full embassies, officials said.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reached the agreement during a meeting in New York attended by U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz on Wednesday.
A joint statement issued after the meeting said both countries agreed to elevate their diplomatic missions to full embassies and exchange ambassadors.
The countries said establishing full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations was in their common interest and would promote peace and create new opportunities across the region.
They also agreed to promptly restore direct flights between Morocco and Israel and conclude agreements on investment protection and avoidance of double taxation.
The statement said the two countries would continue efforts to promote peace, prosperity and security in the region and globally.
Saar described the agreements as significant steps that would strengthen bilateral relations.
”The relationship between Israel and Morocco is important and holds great potential for both our peoples,” Saar said on X, thanking the United States for supporting efforts to strengthen the relationship.
Morocco and Israel established diplomatic ties in 2020 under the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords, which normalised Israel’s relations with several Arab states.
