Germany and Britain plan to extend their military cooperation to include artificial intelligence, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his British counterpart Wes Streeting have announced.
Streeting outlined the plans in an article published in the ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ ahead of a meeting with Pistorius in Berlin scheduled for Monday afternoon.
He said joint efforts to test, develop and eventually introduce AI into their armed forces would strengthen cooperation and help both countries keep up with potential adversaries.
Government and industry representatives from both countries are expected to meet in early 2027 to advance the initiative.
Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in the military. The International Committee of the Red Cross has already warned that an arms race is under way in the field.
Streeting said the threat posed by hostile states was not new, but their growing capabilities required a joint response from European countries.
He said state-sponsored terrorism, acts of sabotage and hostile activities were becoming increasingly common, with many of them originating from Russia.
Germany and Britain agreed to closer defence cooperation two years ago, signing the so-called Trinity House Agreement.
A year later, the two countries announced plans to step up cooperation on cyber defence under the agreement.
AI is now set to become another area of joint efforts, according to Streeting’s article.
