Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says Ethiopia is interested in developing cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy, including specialist training and the use of nuclear technologies in healthcare.
Abiy Ahmed, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, at the third Russia-Africa summit, said the nuclear sector should become the priority area of Ethiopia–Russia cooperation.
Abiy Ahmed recalled that more than 20,000 Ethiopians had received their education in the Soviet Union and later in Russia, which, according to the Prime Minister, has yielded results; the leaders have an opportunity to consider Ethiopian ideas.
“We would like to continue training specialists so that access to medical isotopes can be ensured, because nuclear energy is used not only for energy purposes but also in the healthcare sector.
“It represents significant potential and major opportunities for Ethiopia,’’ Abiy Ahmed said.
The Prime Minister added that Ethiopia is ready to expand exports of goods to Russia.
In 2026, bilateral trade increased, according to the Ethiopian Prime Minister. The Russian President, in turn, noted growth in trade turnover in Jan.–Sep. 2026.
“I would like to note a substantial growth in mutual trade, which exceeded 1.3 billion dollars from January to September 2026.
This is more than double the figure for the whole of 2025. We have many large-scale and ambitious projects across various spheres, from energy, agriculture and industrial cooperation to space exploration, science, healthcare and education,” Vladimir Putin said.
During the talks with Abiy Ahmed, he particularly emphasised the value of the friendly nature of relations between Russia and Ethiopia.
The 2026 Third Russia–Africa Summit is being held in the Russian capital from Oct. 28 to 29.
Following the summit, participants are expected to adopt a declaration and a new action plan for the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum for 2027–2029.
