Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour will leave CNN in June 2027 after 43 years with the international broadcaster, ending a career that has taken her to some of the world’s major conflict zones.

The 68-year-old journalist announced her decision on Monday, saying she had spent months weighing her future before deciding to leave the network.

Amanpour, one of CNN’s most prominent international correspondents, said she hoped to pursue new projects after her departure while continuing to support the broadcaster’s commitment to independent journalism.

“Remember: always be truthful, not neutral,” she said, reiterating a principle associated with her approach to journalism.

CNN chairman Mark Thompson confirmed the decision in a memo to staff, saying the pair had discussed it for several months. He described her departure as a loss for the network but acknowledged that it was the right decision for her personally and professionally.

Amanpour joined CNN in the early 1980s as a news assistant before rising to prominence through her coverage of international affairs and conflicts, including the Gulf War, the Bosnian War and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. She also reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine and Iran.

Her work has included interviews with world leaders and coverage of major political and humanitarian crises.

She has hosted CNN’s international interview programme, Amanpour, since 2009. The programme is expected to move to a weekly schedule in January 2027 before ending in May, while she will continue reporting and travelling on assignments for CNN until June.

Her public television programme, Amanpour & Company, which airs on PBS in the United States, is also scheduled to end in December 2026.

Amanpour briefly left CNN in 2010 to anchor ABC News’ This Week, succeeding George Stephanopoulos, but later returned to the network.

Her departure will mark the end of more than four decades of reporting for CNN, during which she built an international reputation for covering conflict, diplomacy and global political developments.
