No fewer than 13 people have been killed and 34 others injured after a large truck collided with a tour bus on a highway west of Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday.

The crash occurred on the Cairo-Asyut Western Desert Road, according to state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram, which reported that the injured victims were taken to a hospital in Giza for treatment.

Images from the scene showed severe damage to the bus, with its entire front section torn off and metal wreckage scattered across the road. Passenger seats and other debris were also strewn along the roadside.

An eyewitness account by an AFP correspondent said authorities were clearing the highway, with a crane used to lift the damaged bus.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the collision, Al-Ahram reported.

Road accidents are common in Egypt, where crashes are frequently attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and inconsistent enforcement of traffic regulations.

Nearly 6,000 people died in road accidents across the country last year, according to Egypt’s state statistics agency.

Last month, a bus crash in the Sinai Peninsula killed 22 people, including 10 Jordanian tourists.

In August, at least 18 people, many of them children, died when two pick-up trucks carrying agricultural day labourers collided in northern Egypt.
