British-Nigerian rapper Dave has criticised the hardship facing Nigerians, claiming that Western influence is contributing to divisions in the country.

The rapper made the remarks on Saturday, October 17, during the final night of his The Boy Who Played The Harp Tour in Lagos.

“This is a place that is very close to my heart. Nigeria is a country that has faced so many hardships. So, so, so many hardships. A country that is united, a country that is being divided,” Dave told the audience.

He added that the West was contributing to the division while Nigerians continued to face pressure from both foreign powers and their government.

“A country that is being divided by the West every single day. The pressure they put on Nigeria… the pressure the government puts on the people,” he said.

Dave also thanked fans who attended the concert despite the economic difficulties facing many Nigerians, saying he understood that making it to the event had not been easy.

The performance, held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, formerly the National Theatre, marked the end of the rapper's 257-day global tour and his first headline performances in Nigeria.

The two-day Lagos shows, held on October 16 and 17, also featured appearances by Nigerian artistes Burna Boy, Oxlade and Zaylevelten.

Born David Orobosa Michael Omoregie to Nigerian parents from Edo State, Dave has built an international career through his storytelling and introspective lyrics.

His comments have drawn attention to the economic challenges facing Nigerians and the wider debate over foreign influence, governance and national unity.
