Renowned actor James Garner, known for his roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick and The Notebook, died at the age of 86 on Saturday, July 19.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at about 7:57 p.m. on Saturday night to an unspecified medical request at his address. After their investigation, it appears he died of natural causes.

Garner received an Emmy nomination for best actor in Maverick in 1959, and he won an Emmy for his role as Private Investigator Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files in 1977.

More recently, Garner starred in Space Cowboys, The Notebook and The Ultimate Gift.

Garner underwent triple bypass surgery in 1988 and in 2008 he suffered a minor stroke. He leaves behind over 50 years of an acting legacy and is survived by his wife Lois and daughters Gigi and Kim.

After hearing the news, several celebrities expressed their sorrow via social media in remembrance.
