The Federal Government has introduced unique QR tracking codes for approved textbooks to strengthen monitoring and accountability in the selection and procurement of instructional materials in Nigerian schools.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced on Monday that it had released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for the 2026–2028 period, following the completion of the first phase of the national ranking exercise.
The list covers Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 and Senior Secondary School 1.
According to the ministry, each approved textbook has a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details of its title, author, publisher and year of publication.
The ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said the system was designed to improve the identification and monitoring of approved instructional materials.
“The introduction of the Ranking/QR Tracking Code represents an important step towards strengthening the monitoring and control of approved instructional materials and ensuring greater transparency in their selection, procurement and utilisation,” the statement said.
The ministry explained that generating and assigning the codes contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad. Alausa approved the final list.
The ministry said the ranking exercise would continue in phases, with the second phase covering textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
It added that the same identification and tracking measures would apply to the next phase.
The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities and procurement agencies to consult the approved list when selecting and purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
It said the exercise was part of efforts to ensure that pupils and teachers had access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials while improving transparency in textbook provision.
The complete list of approved textbooks, including the tracking code assigned to each title, is available through the ministry’s designated link.
