The Federal Government has proposed releasing the results of major secondary school examinations by August 2027 to allow candidates to begin tertiary admission processes in September.

The plan is part of efforts to harmonise the examination calendars of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and other examination bodies, while reducing timetable clashes.

Under the proposed schedule, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will conduct the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from March 15 to 25, 2027, with results expected in the same month.

NECO’s Senior School Certificate Examination is scheduled for April 1 to May 14, while WAEC’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination will run from May 11 to June 18.

The results of both examinations are expected in August, alongside those of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).

NABTEB examinations are proposed for June 1 to July 5, while NBAIS examinations are expected to hold from June 10 to July 9.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the proposed timetable in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.

The statement said the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, convened a meeting with heads and representatives of the examination bodies at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja to advance the harmonisation process.

“The meeting focused on aligning examination schedules, minimising timetable clashes, and ensuring the timely processing and release of results,” the ministry said.

It added that continued engagement with the examination bodies would help ensure compliance with the proposed deadlines, improve accountability and better align examination schedules with tertiary admissions.

The initiative, according to the ministry, forms part of the education reform agenda of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.

The government said the plan was intended to improve efficiency and enable candidates to gain timely access to tertiary education.
