The newly established Kaura Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery Science in Kebbi State has admitted 172 students, with its first National Diploma and Higher National Diploma graduates expected in 2028.

The institution’s Provost, Dr Muhammad Musa, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interactive session with media aides to Governor Nasir Idris, saying the college was helping to ease pressure on the state’s existing nursing school.

Musa said 80 students from the first intake were sitting for their National Diploma examinations, while preparations had been completed for the admission of a second batch.

“The first set of students is currently writing examinations, while the first batch of ND/HND graduates is expected in 2028,” he said.

The provost said the college had attracted students from outside Kebbi, including Imo, Enugu, Niger, Ogun and Kaduna states, describing the interest as an indication of its potential to train healthcare workers for the wider country.

He said the institution had qualified lecturers, laboratories, a library and information and communications technology facilities to support teaching and learning.

Musa also listed staff quarters, male and female hostels and security arrangements among the infrastructure provided by the state government.

He commended Governor Idris for establishing the college, saying the necessary procedures had been followed to enable the institution to operate according to its academic calendar.

The provost said the college was committed to maintaining academic standards, enforcing discipline and preventing examination malpractice as it trained nurses and midwives for the healthcare sector.

However, he appealed to the state government to provide additional support, including rural posting and teaching allowances, as well as more security personnel to improve safety on campus and in the surrounding community.

Musa said the institution had created employment opportunities and stimulated economic activity while expanding access to nursing and midwifery education.

He urged residents to support government initiatives aimed at improving education and strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce.
