Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has urged the Federal Government to strike a balance in trade deals with China.

This was after some Igbo traders staged a protest on Wednesday against Chinese businessmen who are now adding retail business to their manufacturing endeavours in Nigeria.

The protesters were seen with placards bearing different inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs with megaphones.

In an apparent reaction, Sani reminded Nigerians that China has been fair to them compared to Western countries.

He shared on X, "The Government has statutory responsibility to protect our local industries and commerce. If the future matters to us, we should not become a dumping ground for cheap finished imported products from anywhere. But we also need to strike a balance in dealing with China.

China is the world’s most important country for businesses today. They opened their doors to our businesses and our citizens without the visa restrictions and humiliation they are constantly being subjected to by some Western countries. China doesn’t stigmatise or criminalise our citizens as they do in the West. Enforced protection is just what is needed. They can do without us, but we can’t ‘easily’ do without them; presently, even the US and Europe can’t do without China."
