Small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in Lagos State can access loans of up to N5m under a government-backed scheme aimed at improving access to finance and creating jobs.
The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) provides loans ranging from N50,000 to N5m to eligible residents seeking to establish businesses, expand existing enterprises or improve their operations.
The scheme has three major categories, with different loan limits, eligibility conditions and repayment periods, according to guidelines published on the fund’s official website.
The Micro Enterprise Loan offers between N50,000 and N500,000 to existing businesses that have operated for at least one year. Beneficiaries are expected to repay the loans within 12 months.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, the Micro Enterprise Start-up Loan provides between N50,000 and N250,000. Applicants in this category do not need to show evidence of one year of business operations but must present a vocational training certificate from a Lagos State-recognised certifying body.
Established businesses can apply for the Small and Medium Enterprise Loan, which offers between N500,000 and N5m.
However, applicants under this category must have operated for at least one year and possess registration documents from the Corporate Affairs Commission. Repayment periods range from 24 to 36 months, depending on the approved arrangement.
The LSETF was established under the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund Law of 2016 to provide financial support and employment opportunities for residents.
Through its Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Loan Programme, the fund seeks to help entrepreneurs who may struggle to obtain financing from conventional banks.
Applicants must reside and operate their businesses in Lagos State and meet the requirements for their preferred loan category.
Those applying for the Micro Enterprise Loan are generally required to provide a Lagos State Residents Registration Agency identification number or card, a Lagos State Internal Revenue Service Tax Identification Number and a valid government-issued identity card.
Other requirements include a Bank Verification Number, two passport photographs and bank statements covering the previous six months.
Applicants are also expected to provide accurate personal and business information for verification. Meeting the requirements does not automatically guarantee approval, as applications are subject to assessment.
