Flutterwave’s decade-long expansion into Africa’s financial technology market has earned the company a continental payments infrastructure award, as it seeks to broaden its services beyond transactions into banking and other financial offerings.

The Nigerian-founded payments technology firm was named Africa’s Best Payments Infrastructure Provider at the Euromoney Transaction Banking Awards 2026, a recognition coming as the company marks 10 years of operations.

The award recognises Flutterwave’s role in connecting businesses to payment systems across African markets and facilitating cross-border transactions.

Founded in 2016, the company has processed more than one billion transactions valued at over $50bn and serves approximately four million individuals and businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises and global organisations.

Flutterwave Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, said the recognition reflected the company’s original ambition to make it easier for African businesses to access global markets.

“Being recognised by Euromoney as Africa's Best Payments Infrastructure Provider is a proud moment for everyone at Flutterwave, particularly as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. When we started Flutterwave in 2016, our ambition was to make it easier for African businesses to move money and participate in the global economy,” Agboola said.

He said the company had spent the past decade developing infrastructure to support businesses and connect African markets with the rest of the world.

“Ten years on, we have built infrastructure that supports millions of businesses and connects African markets to the rest of the world. This award recognises the dedication of our team, the trust of our customers, and the partnerships that have helped us grow,” he said.
Agboola said the award also underscored the need to improve the accessibility and efficiency of payments across the continent.

“There is still significant work to be done to make payments across Africa simpler, faster, and more accessible,” he said.
The chief executive disclosed that Flutterwave was expanding beyond payments by developing a broader financial infrastructure covering payments, banking, stablecoin capabilities and other financial services.

“This is why we are continuing to evolve beyond payments, building a more comprehensive financial infrastructure that brings together payments, banking, stablecoin capabilities and other financial services to help businesses and individuals move, manage and access money more efficiently,” Agboola said.

He added that the company remained committed to supporting Africa’s economic growth through its financial technology infrastructure.

The expansion is reflected in Flutterwave’s acquisition of open banking company Mono and its securing of a Nigerian microfinance banking licence, which the company described as key steps towards integrating payments, banking and financial data services.

Earlier in 2026, Flutterwave was named among the world’s top 250 fintech companies by CNBC and Statista, while Agboola was listed among the Top 100 Fintech Leaders by Fintech Magazine.

The Euromoney Transaction Banking Awards, presented by the international financial publication, recognise achievements across the global transaction banking and payments industry.
