Gov Amosun Breaks Down in Ogun Prison


Ogun state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun has lamented the state of Prisons in the country as he broke down in tears on seeing the condition of prisoners at oba, in Abeokuta.
 
Also, no fewer that 15 inmates of Abeokuta Prison, who have been sentenced to death  had their sentence reduced to various jail terms by Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Correspondent kunle ojo reports that the inmates, all males were full of appreciation to the gesture of the Governor

As Nigerians celebrates the 15 years of democracy in Nigeria, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has decried the state of Nigeria Prisons saying both the government and stakeholders have not been fair to prisoners in the country.

Amosun, had earlier visited the Abeokuta prison where he committed the death sentenced on 15 inmates of the prison to various degree of imprisonment. The situation was not the same at Oba Prison where the Governor broke down on two occasion.

Amosun had visited the place with the intention of ‎releasing some of the inmates as a way of decongesting the prison and also to mark the democracy day, but this objective was defeated on seeing the condition of the inmates despite the fact that the environment of the prison was befiting.

Seeing the condition of the inmates, Amosun betrayed his emotion as he broke down twice calling for urgent attention to attend to the welfare of the inmates, especially their health condition.

The Governor, who later address journalists described the condition as appalling; saying the prison that suppose to be a reformation centre as turn out to be death trap for people as he confirmed the death of four inmates of the oba prison.

He directed the commissioner for health to see to the health condition of the inmates, whom he described as sick and that the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state to liase with the police and other organs of government on the speedy trial of the awaiting trial at the prison.

Earlier at the Abeokuta Prison, 15 inmates that are awaiting the hang man noose have their sentences committed to various years of imprisonment by the Governor, a development that led to jubilation and celebration among the inmates of the prison.

Amosun, who also used the avenue to inspect facilities at the prison charged the lucky inmates to make the bes‎t use of the opportunity by refraining from criminal acts that brought them to the prison yard in the first instance.

He appealed to them to see the gesture by the state government as another chance to live noting that, they might not get such chance‎ again if engage in criminal acts.

Some of the lucky inmates were full of praises to God for his benevolence and the government of Governor Amosun‎ saying, they would be contented with the jail terms that will be given to them.

Galaxy News learnt that Amosun will also release some inmates at the Ilaro and Ijebu-ode Prison during his tour of prison formations in Ogun State.
