Nigeria’s efforts to use artificial intelligence in managing misinformation and digital threats during crises have received international recognition, with a framework backed by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) winning two 2026 IPRA Golden World Awards.
The Crisis Communication Hub, supported by NITDA and developed in collaboration with Image Merchants Promotion Limited and the Centre for Crisis Communication, received awards in the Artificial Intelligence in Crisis Management and Publication categories.
The framework was developed from empirical research on artificial intelligence and crisis management and is designed to strengthen communication during emergencies.
It incorporates AI tools for proactive social listening and crisis communication, while supporting efforts to detect fake news, deepfakes, and other digital threats capable of undermining public trust.
The framework also provides a structured approach for coordinating stakeholders during communication emergencies and improving crisis-response efforts.
The awards were presented during the 2026 International Public Relations Association Golden World Awards ceremony in Athens, Greece.
Hajiya Hadiza Umar represented NITDA at the ceremony, alongside Professor Yau Sule of IMPR.
NITDA said the recognition reflected its work in promoting digital literacy, ethical artificial intelligence deployment, and technology-driven communication strategies in Nigeria.
