Kwara United defeated Nasarawa United 2-1 in a Matchday 5 fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Wednesday in Ilorin.
The match was played at the George Innih Stadium Complex, Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl, Ilorin.
Kwara United took an early lead in the 12th minute when Sani Muhammed finished well inside the 18-yard box.
The goal seemed to spur Nasarawa United into action as the visitors took control of the game and put pressure on the home defence.
Their efforts paid off in the 29th minute when they equalised following a defensive lapse and confusion among the Kwara United defenders.
The visitors continued to threaten after the equaliser, as both sides went into the interval with the score at 1-1.
On resumption, Nasarawa United created chances to take the lead but failed to convert them.
Kwara United capitalised on the visitors’ missed opportunities in the 65th minute when Abdulsalam Abdulsalam reacted to a rebound after the Nasarawa United goalkeeper spilled the ball.
He fired home to restore Kwara United’s lead, making it 2-1.
Nasarawa United pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Kwara United held firm to secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, Kwara United coach Suleiman Ashifat praised his players for following instructions and fighting for the victory.
Ashifat, however, acknowledged the defensive lapses during the encounter, assuring that the team would correct the shortcomings before its next game.
Kwara United will next face Kunkhalifat on Sunday in Owerri as they seek to build on the home victory.
