Nigeria will field 10 boxers at the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, as the country seeks to strengthen its standing in the sport on the continent.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced on Monday that the team would comprise five male and five female boxers competing across different weight categories at the championships, scheduled for October 15 to 28.

The 19-member Nigerian delegation is expected to depart the country on Tuesday, October 13, and arrive in Nairobi the following day, ahead of the competition.

In a statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the NSC Director-General, the commission said the tournament would give Nigeria’s elite boxers an opportunity to test themselves against leading opponents from across Africa.

The competition is also expected to provide the athletes with valuable international exposure and an opportunity to showcase the depth of Nigerian boxing talent.

The NSC expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and urged the boxers to approach the tournament with discipline and determination.

The commission also wished the contingent success, encouraging its members to uphold Nigeria’s reputation in competitive sport.

Nigeria’s participation is part of efforts to strengthen its presence in African boxing and give local athletes more opportunities to compete at elite international level. The inaugural championship is expected to attract boxers from across the continent competing for honours in their respective weight categories.
