Michael Kayode’s first senior Italy call-up has effectively ended speculation over his international future, with the Brentford defender confirming that he had been approached by Nigeria but remained committed to Italy.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents, has represented Italy at various youth levels and was part of the team that won the 2023 European Under-19 Championship. He scored the winning goal against Portugal in the final.
Kayode has now received his maiden senior call-up ahead of Italy’s upcoming international fixtures, putting him in line for his first appearance for the Azzurri.
His decision means Nigeria will miss out on a player who has established himself in the Premier League since joining Brentford from Fiorentina.
"Nigeria approached me, that's true," Kayode explained. "But I came through the Italian youth ranks, and I've always considered it an honour to be part of this national team. For anyone, playing for Italy is an honour."
Kayode initially moved to Brentford on loan for €500,000 in January 2025 before the English club made the transfer permanent for €17.5m.
He has made 63 appearances for Brentford, scoring twice and providing three assists.
The right-back has also attracted attention for his long throw-ins, a feature that has become part of his game since moving to England.
Kayode has identified former Italy captain Paolo Maldini as his biggest footballing inspiration, particularly because of the defender's approach to the game.
