Lionel Messi has credited his father’s insistence for his attendance at the ceremony where he received the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, despite concerns about his football schedule.
The former Argentina captain said his father was particularly excited about the recognition and urged him to travel for the ceremony.
Speaking about the award, Messi said, “My father was extremely excited about this award.
“We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award.”
The Inter Miami forward said the honour recognised more than his achievements on the pitch, suggesting that its significance extended beyond his football career.
“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career,” he said.
Messi added that his father was delighted by the recognition and that he was sure he was sharing in the joy of the moment.
“Honestly, he was very happy about this recognition and that’s why I’m sure he’s enjoying it too,” he said.
The award adds to Messi’s extensive collection of individual and team honours. The Argentine has won multiple Ballon d’Or titles, led his country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and enjoyed major success at club level, particularly during his years at Barcelona.
The Princesa de Asturias Awards recognise outstanding achievements in fields including sport, the arts, science and international cooperation.
