Nigeria’s Flamingos will seek to revive their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign when they face Puerto Rico in their second Group B match in Morocco on Tuesday.
The Nigerian side needs a positive result after losing 2-1 to Poland in their opening fixture, while Puerto Rico are also looking to recover from a 6-0 defeat to Korea DPR.
The encounter offers both teams an opportunity to secure their first points and improve their chances of reaching the Round of 16.
Nigeria’s defeat to Poland exposed weaknesses in their finishing, despite creating opportunities to trouble their opponents. Poland took the lead through Wiktoria Skrzypczak’s 33rd-minute penalty before Natalia Skrok extended the advantage in the 65th minute.
The Flamingos responded in the 79th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku converted a move initiated by substitute Kanyinsola Yusuf. However, the late goal was not enough to prevent defeat.
Head coach Akeem Busari’s players will need to be more clinical in front of goal against Puerto Rico while maintaining defensive discipline to avoid another setback.
Puerto Rico, meanwhile, are making their first appearance at a FIFA World Cup at any level. They qualified after finishing as the best-ranked runner-up in the final round of the 2026 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Qualifiers.
Their qualification campaign included a 3-1 victory over Haiti and a 9-0 thrashing of Bermuda. Giselle Falcón scored a penalty against Haiti and netted twice against Bermuda.
However, their World Cup debut proved difficult as Korea DPR handed them a 6-0 defeat, with Yu Jong Hyang and Kim Won Sim scoring twice each.
The result highlighted the challenge facing the tournament debutants, who must improve defensively if they are to contain Nigeria’s attacking players.
Despite Puerto Rico’s heavy opening loss, the Flamingos cannot afford to underestimate their opponents, who are also seeking a historic first victory at a FIFA World Cup.
The outcome could prove important to both sides’ qualification hopes. Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the Round of 16, while the four best third-placed teams across the six groups also progress.
Korea DPR’s opening victory has given them an early advantage in Group B, increasing the pressure on Nigeria and Puerto Rico to collect points in their remaining matches.
A victory would give the Flamingos a timely confidence boost ahead of their final group fixture, while another poor result would make their route to the knockout stage more difficult.
For Busari’s side, improved finishing, concentration and defensive organisation will be crucial as they attempt to turn their opening disappointment into a positive result against Puerto Rico.
