Several European clubs face fitness concerns ahead of the return of domestic football after a number of players picked up injuries while representing their countries during the September international break.
Real Madrid are monitoring Kylian Mbappé after the forward developed a knee problem during France’s match against Türkiye. Mbappé scored before being substituted after appearing to experience discomfort.
Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala is another major concern after suffering a thigh injury during Germany’s warm-up for their match against the Netherlands. Examinations revealed a torn muscle fibre in his right thigh, prompting his return to Bayern for treatment.
Germany also lost Arsenal forward Kai Havertz to a muscular problem during the international window. He was forced off against the Netherlands and subsequently left the national-team camp.
Liverpool are dealing with concerns over two forwards. Cody Gakpo lasted only 16 minutes of the Netherlands’ match against Serbia before suffering a lower-leg problem, while Alexander Isak sustained a thigh injury during Sweden duty.
Isak scored against Romania before withdrawing from the Sweden squad, leaving Liverpool awaiting further assessment of the injury.
Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu was forced off after about 30 minutes of Denmark’s match against Wales following an injury.
Sunderland have also been hit by injuries to Brian Brobbey and Dan Ballard. Brobbey suffered a muscle problem while playing for the Netherlands, while Northern Ireland defender Ballard sustained a hamstring injury against Georgia.
Barcelona were handed a late concern when Eric García experienced discomfort in his left knee during Spain’s warm-up against England. He was withdrawn from the starting line-up before kick-off.
Juventus are also monitoring Francisco Conceição after the Portugal winger suffered a heavy knee-to-knee collision against Norway. Although he initially continued after receiving treatment, he was later substituted.
The injuries leave several clubs waiting for medical assessments to determine the extent of the problems and possible recovery periods.
With domestic competitions set to resume after the international window, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus and Sunderland will be monitoring their players’ fitness ahead of their next fixtures.
