The Concerned Youth for the Promotion of Peace and Unity Initiative has called for a transparent and inclusive transition process in the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) amid controversy over the emergence of new leadership.
The group, at a world press conference in Abuja, raised concerns over the recent NBBF Congress held in Yola, Adamawa State, alleging that the process did not comply with provisions of the federation’s constitution.
Its President, Comr. Muhammed Ummaya, also questioned the handling of the federation’s disputed financial statements.
The group further sought clarification on the outcome of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission investigation involving the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, who is seeking to lead the NBBF.
Ummaya said the group had petitioned the EFCC for information on the outcome of the investigation, stressing the importance of accountability and integrity among those seeking leadership positions in the federation.
The group also urged the outgoing NBBF President, Engr. Musa Ahmadu Kida, the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders to respect a pending case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
It warned against actions that could affect the subject matter of the litigation while the case remains pending.
The initiative said the transition should be conducted in accordance with the NBBF Constitution and applicable FIBA rules, with all eligible delegates allowed to exercise their rights freely.
