Presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has slammed President Bola Tinubu for saying his administration's economic reforms are not responsible for the challenges Nigerians face.

Tinubu made the claim while delivering a speech marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Day on Thursday.

According to him, Nigeria was like a sick patient who received news that it has cancer.

“When this Administration assumed office, we resolved to do things differently. We chose to excise the cancer. The reforms that followed were difficult. The side effects were real. Yet, we must never confuse the medicine with the disease,” he said.

“Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them. Now, as certain influential but regressive voices would have us abandon the treatment and return ourselves to the abuse of addictive subsidies, we must resist their siren song. We must remember why we began this journey and how far we have already come,” he said.

In response, Sowore noted that many were brought to their knees by Tinubu's inaugural speech, which declared that fuel subsidy is gone.

He shared on X, "Of course, your 'subsidy is gone' policy brought millions of Nigerians to their knees. You wrecked livelihoods, drove up the cost of transportation, food, and basic necessities, and deepened an already devastating cost-of-living crisis. You cannot reform people into hunger, poverty, and desperation and call it progress."
