The Senate has received five executive communications from President Bola Tinubu, including a request to reimburse N100.5bn to Yobe State for the takeover of the Damaturu cargo airport.
The communications also include proposed changes to drug enforcement laws, an expansion of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau’s mandate and legislation to establish a National School of Government.
Tinubu is seeking the repeal and re-enactment of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act to strengthen the legal framework for tackling drug-related offences and investigating suspected drug dealers.
Another bill seeks to amend the law establishing the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to extend its investigative responsibilities beyond aviation to other modes of transport, including maritime operations.
The President also transmitted a bill seeking to repeal the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria Act as part of plans to establish a National School of Government.
In another request, Tinubu sought Senate approval for the domestication of additional protocols to the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The proposal is intended to provide a legal basis for enforcing punishment for genocide and related offences.
The five communications were forwarded to the Senate for consideration and approval.
Meanwhile, the Senate paid tribute to victims of the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crash near Igbokoda in Ondo State and called for a transparent investigation into the incident.
