The Senate has called for stronger flood preparedness and faster relief interventions as it resumed plenary on Tuesday, warning that the impact of flooding could further worsen food insecurity across the country.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, raised the concerns while addressing lawmakers at the resumption of plenary, where he also highlighted the rising cost of living and its effect on Nigerian households.
Akpabio urged governments at all levels to strengthen disaster preparedness, protect vulnerable communities and ensure that relief materials reach victims promptly.
He said early warnings on flooding must translate into concrete preparations, adequate protection for affected communities and effective distribution of relief to victims.
The Senate President warned that the consequences of flooding extended beyond the destruction of homes and farmlands, noting that the loss of agricultural produce could further aggravate food insecurity.
He called for improved coordination among relevant authorities to enable communities at risk of flooding to prepare ahead of disasters and reduce their impact.
Akpabio also spoke on preparations for the 2027 elections, urging politicians to abide by the rules of political engagement and avoid actions that could endanger citizens.
He stressed that the safety and wellbeing of Nigerians should take precedence over individual political ambitions as politicians prepare for the 2027 elections.
The Senate President’s remarks came as lawmakers resumed legislative activities amid concerns over flooding, rising living costs and the broader economic pressures facing households across the country.
