The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has promised to cut government spending on luxury vehicles, chartered flights and other privileges for public officials if its presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, wins the 2027 election.
Adebayo said the proposed measures would free up public funds for education, healthcare and infrastructure, arguing that excessive spending on political officeholders had worsened the hardship faced by Nigerians.
The SDP candidate’s position was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Mark Adebayo, chief media and communications adviser to the Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign.
He said an SDP administration would review spending on executive fleets, government house renovations and other official expenses, while eliminating what he described as wasteful and unconstitutional allowances.
Adebayo argued that public resources were being channelled into the comfort of political officeholders while citizens struggled with rising living costs and deteriorating public services.
He also cited budget analyses and civil society reports which, according to him, indicated that spending on executive offices, official travel and luxury vehicles ran into hundreds of billions of naira.
The SDP candidate further claimed that 33 state governments spent more than $300m, equivalent to about N410bn, on governors’ offices, Government Houses and executive travel in the first six months of 2026.
He said the figures highlighted the need for tighter controls on public expenditure and greater transparency in government procurement.
Adebayo also criticised the purchase of expensive armoured vehicles and management fleets, arguing that such spending was difficult to justify amid widespread economic hardship.
He pledged that an SDP government would redirect funds from what he called political excesses towards projects with direct benefits for citizens.
The party urged Nigerians to support a system focused on public welfare, productive investment and transparent management of government resources.
