Political realignment is gathering pace in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, with former ADC governorship aspirant, Dr Sokonte Davies, defecting to the All Progressives Congress.
Davies, a former ally of ADC vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi, said his decision was driven by his desire to contribute to the political and economic development of Rivers State and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
He said he made the move after “deep reflection, patriotic conviction, and a clear-eyed assessment” of where he could best serve the people.
Davies’ defection came shortly after members of the Rainbow Coalition associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met with Governor Siminalayi Fubara at his residence.
Wike subsequently expressed willingness to pursue peace, saying the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State was coming to an end.
Davies said political stability in the state was among the factors that influenced his decision to return to the APC, adding that he also wanted to contribute to the President’s re-election campaign and national stability.
Reflecting on his time in the ADC, the former governorship aspirant thanked the party’s leadership and members for the opportunity to serve.
“I bear no ill will. Politics is a marketplace of ideas; we can disagree without being disagreeable,” he said.
Davies urged his supporters and associates to remain calm and law-abiding while calling on them to join the APC.
“Let us join hands with like-minded progressives to build the party and serve our people. I call on all who share our ideals to join the APC as we work together for a better future,” he said.
He also thanked Wike for what he described as his “very warm and friendly reception”, as well as APC National Vice Chairman, Chief Victor Giadom, whom he credited with facilitating his return to the party.
Davies also expressed appreciation to APC elders and members for their encouragement and acceptance.
