Plateau:Pupils Protest School Takeover

The pupils of Kufang LEA School in Jos took to the streets in the early hours of the day to protest against the building of a new shopping complex on the premises of their school. The protest that was led by the headmaster of the school was said to have been directed against community leaders who are supporting the alleged owners of the land for financial reasons.

Speaking with the school head master Mr Gyang Sule, he said he does not believe that the land belongs to any family as its being claimed by some. But that it has been a community land offered to government. Adding that, those laying claim to the school landed property have gone to the extent of bribing some of the community leaders to allow them encroach into the school by selling bits of space around the learning environment.

Reacting to the alleged sabotage by the headmaster, Mr Choji who claimed that the school was built on his ancestral land gave the government three months to compensate the family or vacate the entire space adding that failure to do so would lead to grievous consequences. The recent quarrel, according to Choji Gyang started when he tried to erect a shop beside the school.

The pupils, who appeared to have been tutored in the act of protest, carried placards and sang songs telling the encroachers to keep of their school property.
