The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said an image circulating on social media depicting its Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, welcoming President Bola Tinubu at the airport is fake.
The image was shared by X user @Collinenwerem, who asked, "Is that the @inecnigeria chairman welcoming Tinubu yesterday?"
In response, INEC said Amupitan was not at the airport because he never left his office throughout the day Tinubu arrived at the Lagos airport.
The commission said, "FAKE IMAGE ALERT. Our attention has been drawn to an AI-generated image circulating online purporting to show the INEC Chairman in a handshake with the President at the airport. This image is FALSE. No such meeting occurred.
"For the record, the Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, was in his office all through yesterday and left around 9pm. We urge the public to disregard the image and avoid sharing unverified content."
