The Anambra State Government has revealed that under the administration of former governor Peter Obi, N800m budgeted to pay the salaries of staff of the state Water Corporation was diverted as a loan to pay a private contractor.
It said the corporation's staff were owed 42 months' salary.
According to the government, now led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, a lawyer had to approach the state House of Assembly to table the workers' plight.
The state said in a post on X, "In this video, human rights lawyer Barr. Obele stormed the Anambra State House of Assembly, under Speaker Hon. Anayo Nebe, to confront the Peter Obi administration over unpaid salaries for over 700 workers of Anambra State Water Corporation for 42 months.
"Barr. Obele queried why N800m budgeted for workers' salaries was diverted to a private contractor as a loan while workers and their families suffered.
"He called for the sack of the Special Adviser to the then Gov. Peter Obi on Utilities, Engr. Nick Obi, and urged the House to consider impeachment against Gov. Obi for breaching the constitution."
The state government released this information to further counter Obi's claim that he didn't owe salaries when he government Anambra for eight years.
