The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has threatened to pursue the recovery of public funds allegedly misappropriated by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration after he leaves office in May 2027.
The party issued the warning after the Oyo State House of Assembly approved a N100bn loan request by the governor on Wednesday, describing the borrowing plan as reckless and insensitive to residents’ economic difficulties.
In a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC questioned the need for the loan and accused the administration of poor financial management.
The party said Makinde had cited the refinancing of existing loans and the funding of ongoing infrastructure projects as reasons for seeking the facility but alleged that the explanations were not credible.
The Assembly’s Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, had read the governor’s request for approval to obtain the loan from a commercial bank, which lawmakers subsequently approved.
The APC also warned the governor against proceeding with a proposed December 29, 2026, local government election, alleging that more than N4.2bn belonging to the state’s 33 local government councils could be wasted on the exercise.
The party argued that increased federal allocations to states and local governments should translate into improved living conditions for residents, questioning how the state government had spent its available resources since 2019.
It further accused the administration of contract cost inflation, excessive variations and poor compliance with due process, without providing specific evidence to substantiate the allegations in the statement.
The APC also linked the recent resignation of the Director-General of the state’s Due Process Office and other senior officials to what it described as growing problems within the administration.
Warning that the governor and his associates would be held accountable after the expiration of his tenure, the party said they would be required to return any public funds found to have been misappropriated.
“Engr. Makinde and his cronies shall be made to cough out every kobo of the money belonging to our dear state which they have misappropriated while in office immediately after the expiration of his final term,” the party said.
