The traditional ruler commenced the seclusion on Sunday evening as part of the spiritual rites preceding the annual festival, which celebrates Yoruba cultural heritage and traditions.
According to a statement by the Senior Media Officer of the Ooni’s Palace, Sodiq Lawal, on behalf of the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, the Ooni will use the period to pray for Nigeria and seek divine intervention for peace, unity, and sustainable progress.
Speaking shortly before entering seclusion, the Ooni, who is also Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, urged political leaders to place the national interest above their differences.
“I am appealing to our politicians. They might have differences, but we should know ultimately that Nigeria is bigger than all of us. It is very important for our political leaders to always look inwardly on how to better the lot of the average Nigerian,” he said.
He urged politicians to avoid actions and statements capable of threatening national cohesion, noting that political power was temporary.
“Some have ruled this country before as political leaders, and others will come after them,” he said.
The Ooni also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as non-interference in the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission, saying such conduct could strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
He also praised Osun residents for participating in the recently concluded governorship election, saying the outcome demonstrated the ability of citizens to choose their leaders through the ballot.
According to him, the electoral process should continue to provide Nigerians with the opportunity to freely make their choices.
The Ooni said his prayers during the seclusion would also cover Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly as the country prepares for the next general elections.
He explained that the seclusion would enable him to deepen his spiritual connection with the ancestors and prepare for the sacred rites of the Olojo Festival.
The exercise is also part of the preparations for the wearing of the sacred Aare Crown, an important ritual associated with the festival.
The Olojo Festival is one of the major cultural celebrations in Ile-Ife and attracts traditional rulers, cultural enthusiasts, visitors, and members of the Yoruba diaspora.
The Ooni’s seclusion marks the beginning of the spiritual phase of the 2026 festival, ahead of the public ceremonies that will culminate in his emergence in the sacred crown.
