Gov. Seyi Makinde has disbursed financial support to victims of the Bode Market fire incident in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.

The fund was disbursed on Thursday at the market by the Executive Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that fire gutted sections of Bode Market in the Molete area of Ibadan on July 3, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira, but no lives were lost.

Akande said no fewer than 400 traders were affected by the inferno, adding that each victim will receive N250,000 to cushion their losses.

He explained that Gov. Makinde had initially planned to rebuild the market after the fire, but decided to support the traders financially after listening to their request to rebuild the market themselves.

“Our amiable governor is a man with human kindness and a man of the people.

“He listened to the people and allowed them to build by themselves, but promised to assist them,” Akande said.

The chairman thanked the traders for cooperating with the state government and urged them to use the money judiciously.

Akande urged them to keep supporting the Makinde administration for more development across markets and communities.

The market leader (Iyaloja) of Bode Market, Alhaja Sakirat Makinde, commended Gov. Makinde and Akande for the kind gesture.

She said the assistance would ease the burden on those who lost their goods.

Sakirat urged the market women to continue supporting the government for better governance and to attract more development to the market.

NAN also reports that some victims received the money in cash at the market, while others provided their account details for onward transfer.

The market women danced and celebrated, noting that the financial aid would significantly cushion their losses.
