Former Osun Central senator, Olusola Adeyeye, has said the ability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain united will be critical to its performance in the South-West during the 2027 presidential election.
Adeyeye, who is the South-West Coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, said he did not see any political party defeating the ruling party in the region if its members remained united.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he said parties should not assume that the 2027 election would be easy, while insisting that the APC was working to secure victory.
“I make bold: anyone from any party who thinks the next election will be easy for it is suffering self-delusion,” Adeyeye said.
He also said he expected the APC to retain Osun State, despite the popularity of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Adeyeye attributed part of Adeleke’s popularity to his family name, saying the governor had benefited from the affection associated with his elder brother and late father.
The former lawmaker also dismissed suggestions that former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola could pose a major threat to the APC through the African Democratic Congress.
He pointed to the ADC’s performance in the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election and questioned its showing in Ilesa and Osun Central, Aregbesola’s home area.
Adeyeye, however, acknowledged Aregbesola’s personal popularity, saying the former governor would have been difficult to defeat had he been a candidate in Osun.
“If Aregbesola is the candidate, it’s a different matter,” he said.
Adeyeye also cited former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s experience to argue that losing the South-West does not automatically determine the outcome of a presidential election. He noted that Obasanjo lost his ward, polling unit, state and the wider South-West in 1999 but went on to become president.
