Lawmaker Rejects Court Judgement On Party Deregistration

A member of the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has rejected the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the Action Peoples Party, APP.

At a media interaction in Abuja, Ugochinyere described the ruling as a threat to democracy, insisting that previous decisions of higher courts had already settled the issue of political party registration.

He maintained that the affected parties remain legally recognised and will continue to participate in future elections.

The lawmaker also called on the National Judicial Council and the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate the circumstances surrounding the judgment and take necessary actions.

He warned that attempts to shrink Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections could undermine democratic participation and public confidence in the electoral process.
