Kwankwaso Chides National Assembly For Removing Delegates Election From Amended Electoral Act

The Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Engr. Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, in an interview with BBC Igbo version, chided the National Assembly for removing delegates election from the primary electoral process of nominating candidates for elections by political parties in the amended electoral act.

Kwankwaso observed that delegates election is not perfect. He recalled that practical experience of direct primary election in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 1999, showed that direct election was cumbersome and difficult process. Kwankwaso stated that the National Assembly did not consult widely before removing the delegate election from the amended electoral act.

He asserted that many of the National Assembly members had no legislative experience, adding that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, could as well have an agenda to scuttle the opposition parties.

Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, highlighted inter alia: The delegates election is not perfect.

"But from our practical experience of 1999 when our party, then, PDP, decided the primaries based on direct election, it was very cumbersome, very difficult, and therefore, immediately after, We decided, as a party, to change to delegates election.

"I think the National Assembly did not consult widely, and probably, many of them had no experience, or the party, the ruling party, the APC had an agenda to scuttle the opposition parties. Because they have got men at the centre that easily negotiate for everybody and also they, now, have all the state governors.

"They may not have much crisis as the opposition parties..."
