The All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified its grassroots mobilisation in Jigawa State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with thousands of opposition supporters defecting to the ruling party.
The defectors, drawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announced their decision at an APC rally in Limawa Ward, Dutse Local Government Area.
The rally attracted more than 10,000 APC supporters, including women, youths and elderly residents, according to the organisers.
The new members pledged support for President Bola Tinubu, Governor Umar Namadi and the APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
Receiving the defectors on behalf of the APC state chairman, Ahmed Garba, the party’s publicity secretary, Bashir Kundu, described the development as evidence of growing grassroots support for the party.
He said the APC was confident of retaining its dominance in Jigawa in 2027, citing government appointments and infrastructure projects as factors behind the party’s growing acceptance in the area.
Kundu assured the defectors that they would be given equal opportunities within the party regardless of their previous political affiliations.
The APC House of Assembly candidate for the area, Ibrahim Yakubu Yargaba, also urged supporters to remain committed to the party and sustain grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections.
He said continued support for the APC would enable the Tinubu and Namadi administrations to consolidate their programmes and attract further development to the state.
Yargaba, however, warned supporters against complacency and urged them to prevent opposition parties from regaining ground in the ward.
“Do not allow any opposition party to come here and deceive you or undermine the good relationship you have built with the governor,” he told the gathering.
The rally was attended by APC leaders, including Governor Namadi’s Senior Special Assistant on Student Matters, Ambassador Salisu Muhammad Seeker, ward councillor Gambo Dayyanu and other party stakeholders.
The event formed part of the APC’s ongoing mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
