African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to bring petrol prices down to N600 per litre, saying he would support the President’s 2027 re-election bid if that happens.
Amaechi made the statement on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while questioning Tinubu’s claim in his Independence Day address that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity”.
The former Rivers State governor said the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms should be measured by their effect on the cost of living, particularly transportation and petrol prices.
“It is about believability; who do you believe?” Amaechi asked, questioning whether Nigerians were already experiencing the benefits of the reforms.
“Have you asked one of your staff who goes by transport how much it costs from Yanya to Abuja? Has anything come down? Has any price come down, has anything changed?”
Amaechi then offered petrol prices as a specific test of the administration’s economic performance, saying he would personally visit a filling station to check the price.
“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel. I will go myself; if fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.
He further challenged those who doubted the pledge to accompany him with a camera, insisting that he would withdraw as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu if petrol was selling at N600 per litre.
“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel,” Amaechi said.
“And I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down.”
Amaechi’s comments came amid preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC already having submitted the particulars of Atiku and Amaechi to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the election.
