Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is still bitter about the exit of presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Obi and Kwankwaso had joined the ADC in January, boosting the party's chance of dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

However, a coalition of opposition political figures in the ADC couldn't survive beyond months as Obi and Kwankwaso dumped the party to secure the presidential ticket of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

Since their exit, the ADC has fielded former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers Governor and Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, as presidential candidate and running mate,

On Thursday, the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) berated Kwankwaso for calling on Atiku to step down for Obi, calling the statement reckless, self-serving, and a desperate attempt to advance President Bola Tinubu's political interests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC-PCC, Kola Ologbondiyan, accused the former Kano State governor of focusing on opposition leaders rather than confronting President Tinubu’s administration that Nigerians are desperate to vote out.

Ologbondiyan declared that Atiku would win Kano State (Kwankwaso's home state) in the 2027 presidential election with or without Kwankwaso’s support, stressing that the hardship, hunger, poverty and insecurity confronting Nigerians would ultimately determine their choices at the polls.

He noted that Kwankwaso’s position was particularly curious given his political alignment with Peter Obi and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that, as an opposition member seeking to unseat the incumbent government, his priority should be building a stronger opposition rather than undermining another opposition leader.

In an apparent reaction, Senator Sani shared on X, "The ADC guys are still bitter about the Peter and Kwankwaso divorce;hence the smear that they are working for the ruling party or the President.

"No consideration to the fact that they are all accomplished politicians with their own independent track records, and have the right to associate and disassociate.

"This is the price they will continue to pay for refusing to be supplementary and disposable cargo in someone’s container. They wanted to use them and sacrifice them for ritual in their perennial political expeditions. Political parties shouldn’t be cultish groups where one can’t pull out in peace."
