Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged lawmakers to prioritise national interest over personal political ambitions as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.

Abbas gave the charge on Tuesday as the House resumed plenary after its annual recess, unveiling a 100-day legislative programme to complete priority assignments before the end of the 10th Assembly.

He disclosed that the House had achieved between 65 and 70 per cent of its legislative agenda, with 2,747 bills received and 363 passed as of June 2026.

The Speaker identified the conclusion of constitutional amendments on state police and reserved seats for women as key priorities under the new programme.

He also urged the Executive to submit the 2027 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework promptly to enable lawmakers to begin preparations for the next budget cycle.

The return to plenary comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are expected to intensify, raising concerns about the potential impact of campaign commitments on legislative business.

The House also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s request for accelerated consideration of a bill to domesticate the Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols, aimed at strengthening legal protections for civilians during armed conflicts.

Lawmakers further received the President’s request for approval of a N100.509bn reimbursement to the Yobe State Government for the construction of the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport in Damaturu.

The request will require consideration by the National Assembly before any reimbursement can be approved.

Earlier in the sitting, Abbas swore in Usman Kalla as the new representative of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

The House also recorded the defection of Chinwe Nnabuife, who represents Orumba North/Orumba South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the All Progressives Congress.

Abbas’s 100-day legislative plan is expected to focus on outstanding bills and constitutional reforms as the House approaches the final phase of its tenure.
