Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria, arguing that the President underestimated the country’s challenges after governing Lagos State.

Momodu, Deputy Director-General of Media and Communications of the ADC Presidential Campaign, made the remarks on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday while making a case for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He described Atiku, the ADC presidential candidate, as the strongest contender, citing his experience in government and long-standing ambition to lead the country.

“When I say he (Atiku) is the best, it is a statement of fact and even President Bola Tinubu himself knows that,” Momodu said, adding that Tinubu had previously invited Atiku to join forces with him politically.

Comparing the credentials of the three major contenders, Momodu identified Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos governor, Atiku’s experience as vice-president and Peter Obi’s tenure as Anambra State governor as their respective strongest qualifications.

He argued, however, that Tinubu had wrongly assumed that governing Nigeria would be similar to running Lagos.

“When he got to the Presidency, he assumed that Nigeria was Lagos and he soon discovered that Nigeria is different from Lagos,” Momodu said.

He also accused the administration of mishandling the country’s affairs, alleging that people around the President were more concerned about pleasing him than giving him an honest assessment of the country’s economic situation.

“What is lacking in this government is that sincerity,” he said, adding that officials responsible for managing the economy were telling Nigerians what they believed the President wanted to hear rather than confronting the challenges facing the country.

Momodu warned that Tinubu could eventually realise the consequences of receiving advice that did not reflect the realities on the ground.
