A three-storey building, under construction, collapsed on Saturday morning in the Gudu area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, killing 4 persons and trapped many persons beneath the debris and triggering a massive emergency rescue operation by federal and FCT agencies.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning while workers were still site. There was rapid intervention response of the FRSC, Fire Service, NSCDC, the Police, including operatives of the National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, for coordination of rescue operations.
The timely arrival of First Aid Responders led to the rescue of 16 victims out of which four were proclaimed dead, according to NEMA.
The victims are now at the Asokoro General Hospital while rescue operation is ongoing to save those trapped in the rubble.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Emergency Response Bay, Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force, FRSC and FEMA.
As of the latest update, 16 casualties had been evacuated to Asokoro General Hospital, while four persons were confirmed dead.
NEMA said rescue and search operations were still ongoing at the scene as at the time of filing this reports
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, has directed that the victims of the unfortunate incident be given prompt medical attention
In a statement, the spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lere Olayinka, confirmed that administrative measures were in place to support the victims.
According to the statement, Wike directed that those evacuated alive from the rubble be given immediate care without delay.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who was at the scene, said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed that all casualties be given free medical treatment.
