Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano State, says he will remember his late aunt, Hajiya Asabe-Aishatu Abdullahi, by her generosity, humility and love for unity among the family members.

Shekarau made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday during the funeral of Asabe-Aishatu, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 110 years.

“She ‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌enjoys giving out money to the needy and children during her lifetime,” he said.

NAN reports that the deceased was the mother of Alhaji Ado Umar-Muhammad, the former Editor-in-Chief of the Triumph Newspaper, Kano, and a former Permanent Secretary.

She died at her residence in Giginyu, Kano, and was buried at Giginyu cemetery in accordance with Islamic injunction.

The Chief Imam of Giginyu Juma’at Mosque, Shiekh Habibu Umar, led her funeral prayer.

Shekarau said the deceased was very supportive and helpful to people despite her age.

“We have benefitted a lot from her counselling; she has been a source of unity within the family.

“Up to a few months back, she was able to walk on her foot. Few days before her death, she was still mentally alert and can recognise voices, we joke and speak with her,” he said.

He said that she has been an inspiring mother to all members of the family, noting that her death would create a big gap.

Shekarau explained that the deceased was the last to leave among their parents, and prayed Almighty Allah to forgive her shortcomings and grant her Al-Jannah Firdaus.

He also prayed that their children and grandchildren would live by her example of unity in the family.

The former governor recalled that some years back, she used to visit their houses.

“When we say stay, we will come and greet you, she will say, No, this has been very encouraging to us,” he said.

Late Hajiya Aishatu is survived by her only son, Alhaji Ado Umar-Muhammad, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Meanwhile, sympathisers are trooping to the residence to condole with the family.
