Ten passengers sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday, while a separate emergency operation by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) averted a possible train collision at Ilupeju Bypass.
LASEMA said the first incident occurred inward Adekunle after a commercial bus stopped by the roadside to repair a faulty tyre.
According to the agency, another commercial bus rammed into the stationary vehicle from behind while the repair was ongoing. A trailer subsequently hit the second bus before its driver fled the scene.
The agency received a distress call at 9.30am and deployed its Tiger Response Team, which arrived at the scene at 10.05am.
LASEMA paramedics, working with the Lagos State Ambulance Service, administered emergency care to the 10 injured passengers before evacuating them to hospital for further treatment.
The two buses involved were towed to a police station, while LASEMA, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police Force worked to manage traffic and secure the area.
The agency said the affected section of the bridge had been cleared and reopened to traffic.
In a separate incident, LASEMA’s Cobra Squad discovered a branded commercial bus that had broken down on the railway track at Ilupeju Bypass during routine operations.
The team used the agency’s light tow truck to remove the vehicle from the tracks and move it to a nearby lay-by, averting the risk of a collision with an approaching train.
LASEMA said personnel from the agency, LASTMA and the police participated in the intervention.
The agency commended its responders and partner organisations for their swift response, urging motorists to avoid carrying out roadside repairs on highways and bridges.
It also advised vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles regularly to reduce mechanical failures and urged the public to contact emergency services through the agency’s toll-free lines when necessary.
