A support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), BTO4PBAT, has warned that restoring petrol subsidy could destabilise Nigeria’s economy, accusing advocates of the policy reversal of putting political interests above economic considerations.
The group’s Director-General, Adesuyi Adojutelegan, spoke in Irele Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State during a door-to-door campaign to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
Adojutelegan defended the removal of the subsidy, arguing that the policy had placed considerable pressure on public finances before its discontinuation and left some state governments struggling to meet salary obligations.
He said reversing the policy could worsen economic uncertainty and revive fuel scarcity and long queues at filling stations.
The campaign group, sponsored by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, accused those advocating a return to subsidies of using the issue to score political points.
Adojutelegan said the campaign was designed to take the administration’s policies and achievements directly to residents, particularly at the grassroots, ahead of the next presidential election.
He cited road infrastructure projects, the student loan scheme, increased revenue allocations to state governments and developments in the health sector as areas where the Tinubu administration had recorded progress.
The group expressed confidence that residents of Ondo State would support Tinubu’s re-election, pledging to continue its grassroots mobilisation and public awareness campaign.
Adojutelegan maintained that the subsidy removal was necessary to ease pressure on government finances, insisting that reversing the policy could expose the country to further economic difficulties.
