The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into an attack on supporters welcoming Accord governorship candidate Oriyomi Hamzat to Ibadan, which left a 40-year-old man dead.

The victim, Azeez Tajudeen, reportedly sustained a severe injury to his right eye when suspected hoodlums attacked the procession shortly after it left Molete for Iwo Road, where Hamzat’s Agidigbo office is located.

The police said the incident was reported on October 14, 2026, by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, Tajudeen was rushed for medical attention before being taken to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan.

He was examined at the hospital and confirmed dead, while his remains were deposited at the morgue.

The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the case be transferred to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation.

The command said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.

Following the incident, the police urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the command at least 48 hours before holding processions or public gatherings.

It said advance notification would help the police make adequate security arrangements to protect participants and members of the public and prevent breaches of public peace.

The command also appealed to anyone with credible information about the attack to come forward and assist the investigation.
